Why not take a short detour off the Great Western Greenway to visit the atmospheric ruins of Burrishoole Abbey, a 15th century Dominican Friary.
A walk along the south side of the Newport quayside at Medlicott Street will bring you past the Newport Street Market (Fridays from 12 noon). Pass the apartments built on the site of the old seaweed factory and you will find yourself in tranquil Melcombe Bay.
Take a stroll past the stately façade of Newport House, along the quay. During the summer months, children and adults alike enjoy watersports as part of the popular ‘Splash’ Festival. At the point of the Quay is the entrance to Princess Grace Park, a lovely woodland park. Continue along the Quay Road, to loop back into the town.
For a magnificent view of the surrounding area, try the short climb up to St. Patrick’s Church. The generosity of a local merchant helped to build this church in 1912, and the Parish Priest of the time gave his life insurance gratuity to commission the three panel east window, now regarded as the final masterwork of the Irish stained-glass artist Harry Clarke.
